History of House Party

The House Party Concert Tour is in celebration of the House Party movie saga. The release of the first edition of the House Party movie was during the Sundance Film Festival in 1990. The House Party movie quickly established itself as an infectious and engaging comedy, and went on to inspire three sequels – House Party Movie 2, House Party Movie 3, and House Party Movie 4.

 

We bring you an overview of each movie with the help of a timeline below.

   1990         The 1st House Party Movie Releases

“If they get caught it’s all over. If they don’t, it’s just the beginning!” 

 

The original House Party movie is a cult comedy film released by New Line Cinema. The House Party movie debuted at the 1990 Sundance Film Festival, where it won two awards in the Dramatic category – the Filmmakers Trophy and the Excellence in Cinematography Award. 


The House Party stars Christopher Reid and Christopher Martin of the popular hip hop duo Kid n’ Play, and Paul Anthony, Bow-Legged Lou, and B-Fine of Full Force fame.  


Scenes from the House Party movie that gained popularity from generation to generation include a free style rap battle, a dance contest, Full Force as ‘the bullies’, and a genuinely hilarious script. The film grossed more than $26,000,000 in box office sales, with releases in 700 theaters.


   1991         The 2nd House Party Movie Releases

“The pajama jam!”

 

The sequel to the House Party movie, House Party 2 was released in 1991.  

 

The House Party 2 movie again starred Kid n’ Play, members of Full Force – Paul Anthony, Bowlegged Lou, and B-Fine, Tisha Campbell, and Martin Lawrence, along with upcoming film star Queen Latifah. House Party 2 also featured recording artists Tony! Toni! Toné, and Ralph Tresvant, and was dedicated to the memory of Robin Harris who played “Pops” in the original House Party movie. 

 

The House Party 2 movie gained popularity much like the first House Party movie, as it sold over $19,000,000 in box office sales.

   1994          The 3rd House Party Movie Releases

“The best house party yet.” 

 

In 1994, the House Party 3 movie was released starring Kid ‘n Play and Bernie Mac.  

 

House Party 3 is memorable as Chris Tucker made his cinematic debut in this movie. The film also featured TLC, Immature, and comedian Michael Colyar.  

 

House Party 3 is the last film in the series to feature Kid ‘n Play to date. Keeping with the success of the first two films, House Party 3 also made over $19,000,000.

   2001         The 4th House Party Movie Releases

“Time to Raise the Roof!” 

 

House Party 4 is the fourth installment in the House Party film series.  

 

This is the only film in the series to not star Kid ‘n Play, but it shows the legacy of how the great original movie House Party and its sequesl. This next generation film featured stars such as Marques Houston and other IMx members (Jerome “Romeo” Jones, Kelton “LDB” Kessee), Alexis Fields, Kym Whitley, Meagan Good, and Roland “Buddy” Lewis.
